Circuit of the Americas is a 3.427 mile-long racetrack in Austin, Texas which features 20 turns and a 133-ft elevation change. The circuit complex includes a 20-acre grand plaza, 251-foot-tall observation tower, 14,000 person capacity amphitheater, and 9,000 person capacity main grandstands.
In 2011, IKERD was hired by builder Austin Commercial to do Building Information Modeling on the piping, plumbing, and structure of the planned pit building and garages. They were also hired by Alpha Steel to model the main grandstand and observation tower. Once completed, the data provided by the models was used to precisely position the structures onsite, and to coordinate trades for construction.
Since opening in October 2012, COTA has hosted the Formula One United States Grand Prix in addition to races such as MotoGP, the FIA World Endurance Championship, American Le Mans Series, and the Rolex Sports Car Series.
